Welcome, Artists!
About Performing Artists at KMS
Our Performing Artists program is a creative, cross-genre education for your young and aspiring musician. The power of music, performance, creativity, personal growth, and belonging are harnessed together to make an incredible difference in your child's life. In this holistic music education program, your child builds their skills sequentially from pre-k through 12th grade, with each year laying a solid foundation for the next. Our carefully crafted program gives your child the tools to develop into a musician who fully expresses themselves creatively, all while thriving in a community of like-minded players. The program runs October through June. Read more about our program foundations here.
Stage 5: ARTISTS
Ages: 14 - 15 (entering 9th and 10th grades)
Entrance Requirement: 1.5+ years of private study and meets audition requirements; or audition alone
Placement Auditions: Submit a video of your student play a song for us by 9/21. Complete the enrollment form and register online.
Weekly Class Length: 75-min Band Performance Class (piano, guitar/ukulele, voice, bass, drums)
Weekly Private Lesson Length: 60-min Private Lesson in their band instrument
foundation 1: Solo + Group Musicianship
In both their lesson and the group experience, Artists are starting to find their own “voice” on their instrument and are becoming aware of how their individuality contributes to the overall group sound.
Private Instruction: Your Artist is now a serious musician gaining loads of technique every week in their longer 60 minute private lesson.
Group Class: In their 75-minute weekly group experience, Artists play eclectic songs, inclusive of many different genres. In focus here, Artists learn to arrange, or to design the sound of the music to be reflective of their own individual and collective ideas of expression.
foundation 2: performance + wellness
Your Artist develops performance skills such as properly preparing for shows, dealing with mistakes, self-evaluation post-show, and how to put together a great show from beginning to end. They also continue learning about the sound system and begin running it for rehearsals and shows.
Your Artist will perform 3 times with their band, and, if they choose, as a soloist, in our progressive Student Showcases at the end of every trimester.
Artists, along with the Stage 6 Innovators, can get their busking permit through the Arts Council’s “Blue Skies” program, and are encouraged to organize for other public performance opportunities.
foundation 3: Personal development
Artists get to spend a lot of time learning about themselves through various personality measures such as the Myers-Briggs and the Enneagram.
They continue journaling “Morning Pages” to express their feelings and practice connecting deeply with themselves as the inner world is the source of inspiration for many artists.
Conversations about developing a growth mindset, courage, and the strength of vulnerability to be seen for who you are are in focus here.
foundation 4: Artistry + Creativity
Now the well-formed practice of taking creative expeditions with family and friends turns into a mini solitude retreat which The Artist’s Way calls “Artist Dates.” These times of quiet reflection allow your Artist to hear their inner voice - a foundational part of the creative process and a guide for life.
Each Artist receives their second Songwriter’s Notebook to continue the process of writing their own lyrics and songs for themselves and/or to play with their band.
Your child will begin to internalize basic creative principles to discover and trust that they, themselves, have full permission to create.
